Shake Russell
The Shake Russell Band surges with Time Spent. Shake's deeply soulful, raspy voice melds into well-established harmonies with musical compatriot, Jack Saunders, forming one of the Lone Star State's most complimentary duets.
Shake's band features veteran Point Blank guitarist Rusty Burns, with Jack sharing his considerable talent on bass. Keyboardist Riley Osbourne offers added influences gained from playing with many of Austin's greatest originals, like Greezy Wheels, B. W. Stevenson, Balcones Fault, The Banded Geckos and Eric Taylor. Peter "Buzzy" Gruen keeps the band's heartbeat on drums.
Time Spent showcases Shake's superb sensitivity as a songwriter, proving why Clint Black, Ricky Skaggs, Waylon Jennings, Jessi Colter, Gary P. Nunn, B.W. Stevenson, Bill and Bonnie Hearne have all chosen to record his songs.
Shake Russell first came to fame when "You've Got a Lover" landed the # 2 spot on the charts and subsequently won a BMI achievement award for one of the most played songs on country radio.
From early influences of Hank Williams and the psychedelic rock experienced in Independence, Missouri with hometown friend, Dana Cooper, Shake's music went into a final chrysalis after meeting John Vandiver. Vandiver showered the young singer/songwriter with a generous dose of country and folk blues. The musical union eventually lured Shake to his true home of Texas.
The Shake Russell Band met with immediate success, with appearances on PBS' hallmark Austin City Limits and also winning the 1981 Texas Buddy critics' choice award for best new band. Around the same time, fans recognized his distinctive style on the title song for the PBS documentary "The River of Innocence."
